If you're planning to be at Maker Faire, in San Mateo, California, this weekend - "a two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset" - do consider stopping at the Wikimedia Foundation/Wikipedia booth. There you'll find (among other things) a free booklet you can take home: Wikipedia Reader’s Guide: The Missing Manual, which (full disclosure) I wrote.
The booklet has two major parts, both based on the book Wikipedia: The Missing Manual:
* An expanded version of Appendix B, "Reader's Guide to Wikipedia"
* Most of the content (I'm told; haven't seen yet) of Chapter 1, "Editing for the First Time."
This could be something useful to give to a person thinking about getting involved in editing Wikipedia. Or to someone who just reads Wikipedia and isn't aware of all it offers.
(And yes, I think O'Reilly is going to put up a downloadable version of the booklet, in pdf format; I'll post separately on that if/when it happens.)
